AIKEN — Even if she does think she’ll win, Natasha Dicks doesn’t want others to say it.

The Aiken track star has been unstoppable at state meets, winning three consecutive state titles in the triple jump and twice placing second in the long jump.

But please don’t tell her she’s going to win.

“For me, people telling me, ‘Oh, you’re going to win. You’re going to win,’ it really does upset me – don’t do that,” Dicks said with a smile. “You never know when someone will pop up and beat you.”

There was no surprising loss for Dicks in the triple jump for Class AAAA this year. So, for one more time, Dicks is The Augusta Chronicle’s girls track athlete of the year.

She jumped 40 feet, 6 inches at this year’s South Carolina High School League state meet to win another state championship.

Dicks was also a member of Aiken’s 2010 state championship volleyball team. The Lady Hornets have returned to the final for the past two years.

Dicks will next compete in track for the University of South Carolina, where she’ll be practicing more than ever before and will be looking forward to traveling.

At her final track meet for Aiken, Dicks didn’t have much time to prepare. She arrived a little later than expected, meaning there was just a quick bathroom break and a shortened warm-up — only one run-through.

No matter. Northwestern’s Julisa Tindall posted 39 feet, 9.75 inches, but Dicks didn’t stop thinking she would win, even as Tindall received cheers for her impressive mark.

“ ‘Do they know who I am?’ I got really conceited,” Dicks said with a laugh. “So I guess it does help to be a little overconfident.”
