The South Aiken soccer player tallied 31 goals this season and 22 assists. The Thoroughbreds reached 20wins, going all the way to the Class AAAA state quarterfinals.

Zaremba was instrumental in his team’s success, which makes him The Augusta Chronicle’s All-Area boys soccer player of the year.

“He’s going to outwork the next man,” South Aiken coach Paul Waters said. “He’s not going to just be on the team; he’s going to be playing. He’s just got that mentality, ‘I don’t want to be sitting here. I want to be playing on the field.’ ”

Only a junior, Zaremba was named All-State as the Thoroughbreds were the top team in the regular season in their region. The forward already has more than 80 goals in his career, meaning he’s within range of setting the school record and hitting the century mark.

Along with using his technical approach, Zaremba will use his speed to get a good shot. Those abilities have him set for college, even though Zaremba still has another year left to win a state title at South Aiken.

He plans to attend the Naval Academy.

“My grandfather served in the Navy; I learned about that in middle school,” Zaremba said. “It’s just about serving your country, that kind of aspect. That was always in the back of my mind.”

Zaremba’s coach knew he had someone special right away. As a freshman, Waters said Zaremba reached the 20-goal mark. And he just keeps getting better.

“You don’t get to coach many kids like that,” Waters said. “I’m fortunate enough that he’s on our team here at South Aiken. I’d hate to face him.”
