Fighting Irish star Thompson named All-Area player of the year

Sydney Thompson would be forgiven if she couldn’t remember all of her goals. After all, 132 goals would take up a lot of memory space.

Sydney Thompson had 43 goals this season as the Lady Irish reached the GHSA Class A state semifinals.

However, the Aquinas girls soccer star can recall many of them, which include the 43 she scored this season as the Lady Irish reached the Georgia High School Association Class A state semifinals.

For the impressive finish to her career, Thompson is The Augusta Chronicle’s Girls Soccer All-Area Player of the Year.

“She’s very talented, but with the talent she’s given, she works extremely hard to get better. She always wants to be the best – she always wants to win,” Aquinas coach James Leonard said. “It’s unreal. She has a very good skill set. To be a good forward, you need a nose for the goal, and she definitely has that. Her at 50 percent is still a threat to score goals. She’s always a threat to score goals when she’s on the field, no matter where she is.”

With Thompson, who will be attending Lander, the Lady Irish always had a chance to win.

In the state tournament, the Lady Irish picked up a pair of one-goal wins against Brookstone and Savannah Country Day. The run ended in a 2-1 loss to Fellowship Christian, with Aquinas slowed by injuries. Thompson sustained a quad injury in the quarterfinals but still helped her team score its only goal in the semifinals.

Thompson plays soccer year round. Her experience, and her speed with technical skill, made her a coach on the field.

Though she was Aquinas’ main goal scorer, Thompson had more fun watching her teammates find the back of the net.

“I personally like my assists,” said Thompson, who had 15 assists as a senior and 80 for her career. “Most of my assists came to girls who never scored before. They get so excited when they score their first goal. Being a part of that is very cool.”
