Fox Creek softball falls to Lewisville

Lewisville 5, Fox Creek 1

The view didn’t change much – and neither did the pitch.

The Fox Creek softball team had runners on in every inning, but it couldn’t solve the slow but effective pitching of Lewisville starting pitcher Madison Vinson in a 5-1 home loss Monday in the Class A Upper State tournament bracket. With the defeat, the Lady Predators must win four games in a row to win the Upper State championship, starting with tonight’s home game at 5 p.m.

“She threw it over the plate, we just didn’t hit it,” Fox Creek coach David Bell said.

Fox Creek (19-7-1) had at least one base runner in every inning, and sometimes it had two. But it saw scoring chances end in only outs even with three hits by Nicole Gibson.

At the same time, the Lady Lions came up clutch – they scored four of their runs with two out.

Lewisville’s Vinson didn’t need much speed on her pitches to get outs. Instead, she frustrated hitters into getting out in front of the ball. She kept getting outs until Fox Creek had two on and one out in the seventh.

But even after Lewisville went to a different pitcher to close the game, the Lady Predators’ offense struggled, getting two grounders to end the game.

As for the Lady Lions at the plate, they put the ball in play and manufactured runs. Leadoff hitter Logan Miller had two hits against Fox Creek pitcher Stefanie Bloedel, and No. 2 hitter Autumn Jordan consistently advanced runners with bunts.

That allowed Lewisville to score more than enough runs, getting an RBI single from Staci Ernandez and some good fortune with Fox Creek errors.

“It was just a hard-fought game,” Lady Lions coach Jerry Thomas said. “They got a good team. We just came out on the good end of the stick.”
