Greenbrier had an edge in the number of chances and was seemingly always on the attack, but the Lady Wolfpack weren’t safe until Ashton Bowles locked down the win late in the second half.
Bowles scored two goals and had an assist in a 3-1 victory against Ware County in the first round of the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAA state soccer tournament Tuesday.
Bowles’ second goal, with 6:52 to play, came after Ware County got a boost from Tera Blount. She got by some defenders and scored her team’s lone goal with 10:07 to go. Blount’s attempt found the keeper’s gloves, but the strike had enough on it to bounce in.
Greenbrier (10-5-2) kept pressure on Ware County’s defense throughout the match. The Lady Wolfpack had headers that just missed, passes through the box without a finish and promising attempts that went just wide of the far post.
Natalie Thompson was the first to score on a cross she headed in about midway through the first half. She worked her way so close to the net that her momentum after the header took her into the back netting.
Bowles recorded her first goal after a throw-in 4.1 seconds before halftime. Her second goal finished off the win and made sure Greenbrier moved on to the next round.
The Lady Wolfpack will play at home again next Tuesday in the second round against Starr’s Mill.
“It feels good to get the first round over with a ‘W,’ ” Greenbrier coach Wes Kendrick said.
