Burke County's Cornelius Washington was drafted by the Chicago Bears on Saturday.

The former Burke County and University of Georgia player was NFL draft expert Mel Kiper’s best available player Saturday, with the No. 1 hold lasting for hours instead of minutes.

Finally, Washington’s wait came to a close. He was taken in the sixth round at No. 188 overall by the Chicago Bears on Saturday during the NFL Draft.

Washington, a Hephzibah native, had 22 total tackles this season with the Bulldogs. He also had a big moment in the 2012 SEC Championship Game. Though Georgia lost to Alabama, Washington blocked a field goal attempt; teammate Alec Ogletree wound up with the ball and scored on a 55-yard return.

Washington’s stock appeared to rise at the NFL combine before the draft. His 4.55 on the 40-yard dash was second out of all linebackers, his 36 repetitions on the bench press was the best and his 39-inch vertical ranked second.

But the 6-foot-4 Washington had to wait for his turn during the draft. His chance finally arrived at the 20th pick of the sixth round.
