Augusta Christian baseball coach abruptly quits

  • Follow High school

After hiring a new baseball coach over the summer, Augusta Christian is in the market for a new one.

Tom Abdo, who led the Lions to an 8-10 record, abruptly resigned April 5, just before the beginning of spring break. He is not remaining at the school in any capacity. His other duties were teaching and coaching the middle school’s football team.

The Lions brought in Abdo in August. He previously coached at Atlantic High School in Port Orange, Fla., from 2001-04 and from 2008-11. He replaced Jack Hook, who stepped down as coach to focus on his duties as math department head.

Abdo’s resignation “was for personal reasons,” athletic director Marty Griffin said. “We’re going to complete the remainder of the season with our assistant coaches.”

Assistant coach Steve White will be interim head coach, with Mark Guilfoyle as his assistant.

White is in his third season with the varsity team while Guilfoyle is in his first, but second at the school.

The Lions are still in the the hunt for a berth in the South Carolina Independent School Association state playoffs, but White feels the transition will be a smooth one.

“We know the guys,” White said. “If we can win both upcoming region games, we’ll be solidified for state.”

A meeting for parents and players was scheduled for Monday night with the administration.
