It was the half-inning that wouldn’t end – and Westside wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

Down three entering the bottom of the sixth, the Patriots sent 11 to the plate and scored six times to rally for a 9-6 home win against Screven County on Tuesday in a Region 3-AA game.

All of Westside’s fun happened with two outs with a little help from a Gamecocks’ defense that had six errors in the game.

“That gave us one run, and it gave us a spark,” Westside coach Gerald Barnes said, referring to one error.

Before the sixth, the Patriots (7-3, 3-0) had only three hits in 52/3 innings. But they got four in a row, including Mason Dodd’s RBI single. Price Dodd then crushed the first pitch he saw for an RBI double that tied the game at 6.

Frank Fleming soon followed by singling under the diving first baseman for another run. On a tough play at third, a low, hurried throw had to be made to beat the runner, but the ball got away to allow the ninth run to score.

Prior to Westside’s six-run inning, it looked like the Gamecocks (3-2, 1-1) would win despite the errors. They scored four runs in the top of the fifth to go up 6-3, with Caleb Krulic’s two-run single.

Carl Heindel and Aaron Brower each had three hits for Screven County, which had 11 hits as a team.

Brower doubled in the seventh but Patriots pitcher David Hagelston retired the next two to get the win and keep Westside undefeated in the region.

“First of all, it’s important we won, and that the guys came back,” Barnes said. “We got a long way to go in the region, but we’re glad to win this one.”
