MACON, Ga. — Curtis Baptist head coach John Spurlock said his team has struggled a bit from the free-throw line this season.

So the Crusaders put in some extra work at the line in preparation for the GISA Class A Final Four.

That work paid off Friday in the semifinals as Curtis Baptist knocked off Georgia Christian 58-42 for a spot in the championship game Saturday. The Crusaders hit 26 of 34 from the foul line, including 16 of 22 in the final quarter while making only three shots from the floor.

“Honestly, we haven’t been very good at the free-throw line this year,” Spurlock said with a smile. “But they really concentrated on those shots (Friday) and hit them when we needed them.”

Because of those foul shots, the Crusaders (23-9) have moved one step deeper in the playoffs after losing in the Class AA semifinals last year.

Brian Wilson led the Crusaders with 25 points, including two 3-pointers and 11 free throws. He was 9 for 13 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.

Curtis Baptist trailed 10-8 early in the second quarter but used a 9-0 run to gain control and never trailed after that.

CJ Lynch led Georgia Christian (22-6) with 19 points.

“Our girls were here (Thursday) and lost, and that was tough,” Spurlock said. “But we’re excited to get the win, and for us to win a state championship would be just huge for our school.”
