MACON, Ga. — Crisp Academy head coach Gina Mitchell knew her team had an advantage on the inside against Curtis Baptist and the Wildcats exploited that to perfection.

Crisp Academy dominated in the paint to cruise to a 64-27 GISA Class A semifinals victory Thursday at Hawkins Arena. It earns a shot to play for the state championship against the Georgia Christian-Citizens Christian winner Saturday.

Madi Mitchell led Crisp Academy’s inside play with 26 points. The junior was 10 of 15 from the floor and 6 for 6 from the foul line.

“We knew they had some good guards but that they would have trouble with us on the inside,” coach Mitchell said. “They just don’t have the presence that we do in there, so I thought we could take advantage of that.”

The Wildcats (30-2) led 19-10 after one quarter but really blew the game open in the next two quarters. Crisp Academy outscored Curtis Baptist (15-17) 29-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

Kara White, Jay Jay Yawn and Maddie Krause each had eight points for Crisp Academy, while Kendall Wilson had six.

Alyssa Spurlock led Curtis Baptist with 10, while Kaitlin Swanson had six. Curtis Baptist, however, made only 12 shots from the floor and struggled with Crisp Academy’s pressure defense.

“Our defense has been good just about the whole year, really,” Mitchell said. “And our girls know to not let up because anyone can come back on them if they do. So the talk at halftime was about keeping the pressure on them and looking at the score like it was 0-0.

“It was just a great game for us and a great win.”

Congrats to the Curtis

Congrats to the Curtis Baptist team for their performance this season. Outstanding playing this year from a wonderful group of girls and great coaching from Coach Swanson and her staff. Very proud of all of you.

Reminds you of Larry Gritton teams of the past!

He had some good boys teams in the early 2000s!
