“It’s a big accomplishment and I’ve been working for it my whole life and it’s like wow, it’s finally here,” said Nelson.
In 2012, Nelson recorded 60 tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception. He was selected as an All-County defensive back and Region 2-AAAAA All-Region Second Team athlete.
“He’ll do well at the college level because of his tenacity, his will to win and his leadership,” Evans defensive backs coach Marcus Allen said. “He led his team this year. Even when we struggled he practiced hard and focused on his goal, which is is being a good team player but also eventually signing a scholarship which is what he did today.”
Nelson liked the fact that the Eagles, who will compete in the Mid-South Conference, begin their first year of play in 2013.
“They’re starting a brand-new team, and for me that’s just showing I’ve got to work extra hard to get my starting spot because that’s where I want to be,” said Nelson. “With a new team, that’s a chance for me to create leadership with another team. A chance for me to start over.”
It was an overwhelming day for his mother Nichelle, who was proud of her son.
“I’m excited,” she said. “I’m happy for him. We had a couple of choices to choose from and I strongly feel God put him at Reinhardt for a reason.”
