Laney's Donecia Hudson shoots over Monisha Turner. The Lady Wildcats will play for the Region 3-AA title.

The Laney girls basketball team opened the game with a flurry of steals and layups, making a game a rout in the first quarter.

Behind a strong defense, the Lady Wildcats beat Screven County 76-28 Friday nightin the Region 3-AA semifinals. Laney plays Dublin tonight at 5 p.m. in the region championship.

“This team has blended in now together,” Laney coach Otis Smart said. “They’re playing team ball.”

In less than 30 seconds, the Lady Wildcats (25-0) took a 6-0 lead on three baskets

The press overwhelmed the Lady Gamecocks from the start, and the Lady Wildcats ended the first quarter on a 25-0 run to take a 31-3 lead.

Eleven players scored for Laney, with five getting at least eight points.

Khadijiah Cave led with 18 points to add along with her dominance on the boards.

Cave, who has committed to play at Baylor, had eight points in the opening quarter, two shy of Destiny Brewton’s total from the first period. Brewton sparked the full-court pressure and led the half-court offense. On one play, she connected with a cutting Simone Smith, who was wide open behind the defense near the hoop.

With the relentless defense, Laney stretched the lead to a 30-plus cushion in the second, a 40-plus gap in the third and then almost an even 50 in the final quarter.

Screven County’s Courtney Roberts was the main threat for the Lady Gamecocks. The senior showed impressive touch on a couple of drives that saw contact, scoring points despite fouls. She had 18 points in the game.

But the Lady Wildcats had both scoring depth and a deadly defense, with Brewton providing some of the highlights with her steals.

“I can telegraph where they’re going to pass the ball,” she said.
