Khadijiah Cave, at 6-foot-4, is already imposing. And that’s before she uses her long arms to add to the advantage.

Throw in frontcourt mate Simone Smith, and the Lady Wildcats basketball team will own the glass.

Against Josey on Saturday, Laney played great defense and grabbed rebound after rebound to win 59-21.

“We work on that every day in practice – boxing out,” Cave said. “We want to get every rebound.”

Cave had 20 rebounds, and she led her team with 15 points.

Smith added 10 points for the 22-0 Lady Wildcats, who held Josey without a field goal for the entire second and third quarters.

Laney was already ahead by 11 points after the first period, so the lengthy field goal drought only made the score more lopsided. By halftime, it was 39-11; eight minutes of game time later, it was 53-13, a sizeable edge that forced a shorter fourth quarter.

The Lady Eagles had trouble getting off shots with Laney’s press and blocking prowess, and when they were fortunate to get off shots, there weren’t many offensive rebounds to be had.

“I’m happy,” Laney coach Otis Smart said. “This team is doing things – this team is playing ‘D.’ ”
