Cross denies McCormick Class A state title

COLUMBIA — Devante Shepherd ran for 166 yards and three touchdowns to lead Cross to a 38-26 victory over McCormick to capture its first Class A Division II state championship

Shepherd scored on a 7-yard run with 2:18 left in the first quarter and added an 11-yard touchdown run with 38 seconds to play in the period. He had a 66-yard scoring run in the third quarter.

Dionte Evans returned the second-half kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown to give the Trojans (11-3) a 20-0 lead, but the Chiefs (11-3) rallied with three third-quarter touchdowns and trailed 32-20 heading into the fourth quarter. The teams combined for 348 yards and 40 points in the third quarter.

Evans scored on a 29-yard run to put the game out of reach with 1:29 left.

Jalen Adams had 116 rushing yards for the Chiefs, and Jay Weaver rushed for 128 on nine carries but was only 2 for 11 passing for 40 yards.

CHRIST CHURCH 27, JOHNSONVILLE 18

Christ Church scored nine points in eight seconds in the fourth quarter to beat Johnsonville and cap an unbeaten season.

A snap over the head of the Johnsonville punter gave the Cavaliers (14-0) a safety. Quan White returned the ensuing free kick 51 yards for a touchdown with 3:13 to play, virtually sealing back-to-back state titles for the Cavaliers.

Christ Church led 10-6 at halftime. But Johnsonville (13-1) scored on a 17-yard run by Brison Allison and a 73-yard run by Tushai Edwards to take an 18-10 lead.

Christ Church then tied it on a 1-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion.

To reach the championship game, Christ Church defeated C.A. Johnson, St. Joseph’s and Ware Shoals.
