Aquinas’ John Morris will key in on a defender as he tries to create space for a teammate – at least when the football is not in his hands. But there are times when it is, like it was this past Friday.
With the offense line and blockers creating a path, Morris had a huge night, rushing for 232 yards and three touchdowns in Aquinas’ 49-14 win against Georgia Military. Morris is The Augusta Chronicle’s Player of the Week.
“It was different,” said Morris, who’s rushed for 410 total yards in consecutive wins. “You have to see the whole defense all together.”
Morris is often a blocker for Brendan Douglas, but has filled in as Douglas battled a broken hand. The two basically switched roles, as Douglas and the offensive line opened lanes. Douglas also made 19 tackles a week ago and is expected to be the main ball carrier tonight against First Presbyterian.
But Morris ensured the Irish’s offense could remain potent even with injuries.
“He’s one of the most focused and hard-working guys we’ve had since I’ve been here. He’s one of the key guys for us,” Aquinas coach Matt LeZotte said. “We had a good thing with John and we went with it.”
