Irish remain perfect with victory over Cobras

Aquinas 50, Twiggs County 8

PLAY OF THE GAME: After a failed fourth-and-short by the offense to open the game, Antonio Clark snatched a would-be touchdown pass from Twiggs County, setting the stage for Aquinas to drive 80 yards to put up the first points on the board and set the tone early.

STAR OF THE GAME: Aquinas senior Brendan Douglas. In short: 13 rushes, 245 yards, two receptions, 60 yards, six touchdowns.

WHY AQUINAS WON: Dominant blocking on both sides of the ball. For the offense, the linemen and receivers downfield did their part, allowing Douglas and Ruben Garnett all the room they needed to provide a true thunder-and-lightning style of attack on the ground.

WHY TWIGGS COUNTY LOST: The Cobras’ running game showed signs of life, as Tre Butts broke multiple big runs around the edges early on, but they just couldn’t keep up with the physical style Aquinas brought.

QUOTABLE: “Controlling the line is all we work on in practice, and it’s paid off so far,” Aquinas head coach Matt LeZotte said.

NOTE: The game was delayed for 45 minutes as the Cobras’ Perfect Robinson was down with what appeared to be a head injury. He was loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher and taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital for treatment.

NEXT: Twiggs County (1-3, 0-1 in Region 7-A) at Wilkinson County, Aquinas (4-0, 1-0) vs. Hancock Central, 7:30 p.m. Friday.

It was a great game for the Irish, but we were sad to see a player get injured. We pray for a quick healing and smooth recovery for Robinson.
