Wolfpack edge Knights in softball

In the last regular season game of the year, home field throughout the Region 2-AAAAA softball tournament was on the line when Evans played host to Greenbrier on Tuesday night.

The Lady Wolfpack beat Evans 3-1 on Sept. 13, but an Evans win by three or more runs would give them the No. 1 spot in the subregion.

Evans led 1-0 until the fifth inning when Greenbrier catcher Lee Anne Rees belted a line drive over the left-field fence for a two-run homer. The Lady Wolfpack made it stand up, winning 2-1.

“The big thing today is we clinched home field,” said Greenbrier coach Garrett Black. “Big picture is, we realize that Evans is very dangerous.”

The Lady Wolfpack will play host to a Region 2-AAAAA tournament game on Saturday. Even with the loss, Evans (16-8-1) clinched the No. 2 seed in the subregion and will also have a tournament home game on Saturday.

Greenbrier (20-6) committed two errors, one of which led to Evans’ only run in the first inning.

Pitcher Kirsten Titus will take the mound for the Lady Wolfpack on Saturday after her outing which saw her improve to 14-4 on the year. In seven innings she walked one while striking out eight.

Evans starter Lexi Dodgen allowed the two runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

“It was a good game today to go into the region,” said Evans coach Colette Cassedy. “A loss is a loss, but I’m glad to know we’re still able to host even though we got beat twice in our subregion.”

Dodgen retired the first two batters in the fifth inning, but walked Taylor Dupree which brought Rees to the plate. Rees left runners on base in the first and third innings, but she wasn’t feeling any pressure.

“I did not know the count and I didn’t know how many outs we had,” said Rees. “I just knew that we had runners on and I really wanted to pull through.”
