Burke County football’s time outside the top five of the rankings didn’t last too long.

After losing to Thomson to begin their season, the preseason-No. 1 Bears have won three in a row and are tied for No. 3 in the latest Associated Press Georgia high school football poll for Class AAAA. Burke County had dropped to No. 8 after the defeat, but it’s up to No. 3 after the 35-14 home win against previously unbeaten Statesboro. The Blue Devils were No. 2 but fell to sixth.

Besides Burke County, three other local teams also moved up. In Class A, Aquinas improved to No. 4 after routing Josey, 42-0, and idle Lincoln County went up a spot to No. 6.

In Class AA, Washington-Wilkes, 4-0 for the first time since 2000, went from No. 8 to seventh.

Finally, Thomson and Washington County stayed at Nos. 2 and 3 in Class AAA. The Bulldogs received one first-place vote.
