Musketeers win despite errors

  • Follow High school

RICHMOND ACADEMY. 17,  GLENN HILLS 7

PLAY OF THE GAME: Having watched the offense give up an interception to tie things up, Richmond Academy’s Malcom Mincey jarred the ball loose on a huge hit, forcing a fumble the Musketeers recovered. The momentum immediately shifted to the home team, and Joseph Ardrey booted a 22-yard field goal with 3:19 left to put Richmond Academy up for good.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Showing his power and movement, the Musketeers’ C.J. Welcher would easily have gone for 200 yards if three runs of 20 yards or more weren’t called back by holding penalties. Still, the senior back tallied 187 yards on 26 carries, providing the defense a chance to rest when they needed it most.

WHY RICHMOND ACADEMY WON: A championship-caliber effort from the defense. The Musketeers held Glenn Hills to just 117 yards of total offense, including a stuff on a 4th-and-goal from the 1 early in the second quarter to hold the lead.

WHY GLENN HILLS LOST: A poor offensive showing, putting too much pressure on the defense. Between the failed goal-line quarterback sneak on 4th-and-short and the game-changing fumble, the offense failed to hold up its end of the bargain and stretched the defense.

QUOTABLE: “This was the most penalties we’ve ever had in my coaching career. A lot of stupid holding penalties,” said Richmond Academy coach Chris Hughes, on the Musketeers’ 15 penalties in the game.

NEXT: Glenn Hills (1-2, 0-1 in Region 3B-AAAA) vs. South Effingham; Richmond Academy (2-2, 1-0) at Wayne County.
