Quarterback Quinton Hall scored five touchdowns as the Wildcats pounded Glenn Hills 42-0.
“We wanted to really dedicate this game to him,” Hall said of Dupree, who won state championships at Laney in 1961 and 1966. “We feel like he started off our legacy as far as pride in Augusta.”
Laney improved to 2-1, bouncing back from last week’s close loss to Westminster.
Wildcats coach Lemuel Lackey talked before the game about the importance of playing well for Dupree. Lackey said the team will give the game ball to the Dupree family.
“I appreciate everything he’s done,” Lackey said. “It meant a lot for us to come out and represent him and everything he stood for.”
Laney and Glenn Hills played for the first time since 2003, and the Wildcats picked up where they left off. Laney won its fifth in a row in the series and eighth out of nine games dating back to 1994.
Though the Wildcats recorded more penalties (22) than first downs (20), they overcame the miscues with a dominant rushing attack. Laney rolled up 245 rushing yards in the first two quarters and finished the night with 323.
George Myers carried the ball 16 times for 129 yards to lead the way. Hall rushed for 98 yards on 11 carries with two scores. He also went 4 for 6 passing for 111 yards and three touchdowns.
Laney’s defense recorded three interceptions in the final nine minutes of the second quarter, helping the team open up the game. The Wildcats scored 28 points in the second quarter and went into halftime leading 35-0.
“We play a different style of ball. People aren’t used to seeing us play,” Lackey said. “It’s physical. That’s what we try to do. When you don’t play that way, it’s difficult for you.”
Glenn Hills (1-1) struggled to match Laney’s high-powered offensive attack. The Spartans recorded 91 total yards, including two rushing yards on 23 carries.
