Washington County girls basketball star Allisha Gray has torn her ACL, MCL and meniscus and will miss her senior season, she confirmed Thursday in a phone interview.
The Lady Hawk was injured while training in Colorado with the USA Women’s U18 National Team. The squad was preparing for a trip to Puerto Rico for the FIBA Americas U18 Championship.
Gray said she hurt herself playing defense when she tried to change direction. She doesn't know yet when she’ll have surgery.
“I’m done,” she said about her high school career. “But I’m holding up fine.”
As a sophomore, Gray led Washington County to the Class AAA state title and an undefeated season. As a junior, she averaged almost 30 points, eight rebounds and five steals a game. The Lady Hawks reached the state championship game again but lost, ending their 63-game winning streak.
Besides taking honors as The Augusta Chronicle’s Georgia girls basketball player of the year after this past season, Gray was also named the Gatorade Georgia Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
A five-star prospect, Gray is ranked No. 7 for her class by HoopGurlz, which is on ESPN.com. She is already committed to the University of North Carolina.
“They still want me,” she said about the Tar Heels.
