Wildcats, Cavaliers fall in tennis finals

The Westminster boys and Augusta Prep girls lost in the state tennis finals on Wednesday.

The Wildcats fell to Stratford Academy, 5-0, in the GISA Class AAA boys state team finals at Newman Tennis Center. It was Westminster’s first appearance in the state championship round since 2007.

The Cavaliers fell to Deerfield-Windsor, 3-1, in the GISA Class AAA girls state team finals, also at Newman. Augusta Prep won the state title a year ago.

No. 1 singles: Brooke Stevens (AP) def. Ansley Arrington (DW) 6-0, 6-0.

No. 2 singles: Paige Hawke (DW) def. Sophie Paulk (AP) 6-0, 6-1.

No. 3 singles: Annie Whitehurst (AP) and Amy Rao (DW) didn’t finish once DW clinched the win.

No. 1 doubles: Hope Kitchen and Lucy Kelley (DW) def. Caroline Andrew and Brooke Arnold (AP) 6-2, 6-1.

No. 2 doubles: Joyner Tyson and Caroline Holley (DW) def. Julianna Turner and Ana Harbin (AP) 6-2, 6-1.
