The top-seeded Washington County Golden Hawks advanced to the region semifinals with a 38-28 win against fourth-seed Richmond Academy at Josey High School on Wednesday night.

Up by only four points after the third quarter, Washington County (23-1) pulled away as Juwan Burden hit six free throws in the final period. Burden scored a game-high 11 points.

The Musketeers (12-12) were led by Jonathan Bradley, who scored 15 points. He accounted for all 10 of his team’s points in the second quarter.

But Washington County, the South subregion’s top seed, had enough to win and set up a meeting with tournament host Josey for the right to play in the championship game.

WESTSIDE 64, BURKE COUNTY 50

North No. 1 Westside also advanced to the Region 3-AAA semifinals and clinched a state playoff appearance.

The Patriots (18-6) went up by more than 20 points but saw their lead shrink to nine in the second half.

They were paced by Ronald Campbell’s four 3-pointers and 21 points.

The Bears, who started the year 11-0 before ending the season by losing seven of 12, got 12 points from Juan Mixon.

Burke County was the South’s fourth seed and beat Harlem in the first round.

Westside now must defeat Thomson to reach the region title game. The Patriots and Bulldogs split two earlier meetings this season. Westside won the second during its current winning streak, which is now at 10.
