The chances were there. Glenn Hills just needed to finish.

With steals and a solid transition game throughout the night, the Glenn Hills girls basketball team converted enough opportunities to defeat Richmond Academy 52-31 on Tuesday at Josey High School in the first round of the Region 3-AAA girls basketball tournament.

The Lady Spartans must beat Westside, which went unbeaten in subregion play, on Thursday to advance to the Class AAA state playoffs.

“We just had to finish the game,” Glenn Hills coach Bernard Bowman said. “We missed too many layups and free throws.”

Shadrisia Sealey lead Glenn Hills with 16 points.

The Lady Spartans went up by double digits in the second quarter but they failed to convert some easy shots and missed 16 free throws.

Still, the Lady Spartans were up 25-9 before Richmond Academy battled back.

The Lady Musketeers didn’t fair much better at the free-throw line – they missed 12 attempts – but Aleisha Merriweather’s basket put her team within 12 in the second quarter.

Richmond Academy got as close as 11 points twice in the second half, but Glenn Hills had an answer both times.

First, Tykeria Green banked in a shot for two of her 14 points. Then, after the Lady Musketeers’ LaZericka Watkins hit one of two free throws, Green started the fourth with a basket.

“The biggest thing is knowing things get tough sometimes and you got to play through it,” Richmond Academy coach Peaches Stephens said.

Now Glenn Hills gets a third crack at Westside. The Lady Patriots won the first two meetings by a combined 58 points, but the winner of Thursday’s game gets to play in the state tournament.
