Evans to play host to MLK Hoops Classic

The Evans boys basketball team was going to practice today anyway, so it made sense to do something special.

Evans will play host to a Martin Luther King Jr. Day basketball classic, with four games featuring a combination of local teams and squads from outside the area.

“We thought it would be a cool thing to try,” Knights coach Kevin Kenny said about the MLK Hoops Classic. “We got a great field. If you do something like this, you have the best possible teams.”

The Laney boys and girls teams are the other local squads participating, with the Morgan County boys and girls and Jonesboro boys and girls rounding out the field.

Action was scheduled to start with Arlington Christian playing Heathwood Hall at noon in a girls game, but Arlington Christian was forced to withdraw and the game was canceled. The Evans and Morgan County girls will now tip things off at 1:30 p.m.

After that, the two Laney teams and the Evans boys will take turns hitting the court in the next three games.

With a Columbia County school and a Richmond County school playing, Kenny hopes this brings in a strong number of Augusta basketball fans.

But more importantly, he thinks the presence of a handful of other teams from around the state will encourage all fans to attend.

If today goes well, Kenny doesn’t expect this to be a one-and-done tournament.

“If we’re successful, we’ll try to make it an annual event,” he said.
