North Augusta's offense erupts against South Florence

  • Follow High school

When Vinny Miller broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run on North Augusta’s first offensive possession of the game, it looked like it was going to be his show again.

And it was, only this time the rest of the offense joined him.

As Miller rushed for 138 yards on his first 11 carries, quarterback Tyrell Hillary and the passing game took off.

Hillary had thrown for 60 yards on his first 11 pass attempts. He erupted from there as receivers Montez McGuire and DeVontez Rouse had big games.

Hillary threw for 193 yards on his last seven attempts, averaging 27.6 yards per attempt.

After the Yellow Jackets were stopped in the second quarter, three of North Augusta’s next four possessions resulted in touchdowns – all on drives of five plays or fewer.

North Augusta (12-1) put up 46 points against South Florence, the sixth time this season it has scored at least 40 points.

“That’s what happens,” Yellow Jackets coach Dan Pippin said. “We’re trying to be more diversified.”

KEEP AWAY: With Aquinas’ keep-the-Patriots-off-the-field running game and a defense alert to big-play chances, the Fighting Irish held Wilcox County to its worst offensive performance of the season in a 32-14 win.

The previously undefeated Patriots were averaging 39.9 points per game, scoring at least 27 points in every contest.

But on Friday, the Irish ran the ball 48 times – they threw it only once – didn’t fumble and punted just twice as they outscored Wilcox County 19-0 in the second half.

BACK AGAIN: With Lincoln County’s 27-0 win against defending state champion Clinch County, the Red Devils (12-0) are in the state quarterfinals for the 10th consecutive season.

Of the previous nine trips, four ended with a loss in the quarterfinals and two lasted until the semifinals.

Lincoln County advanced to the state championship game the other three times, winning it twice (2005, 2006).
