Burke County Bears draw tough first-round playoff foe

  • Follow High school

Burke County is a No. 1 seed again, but coach Eric Parker knows that doesn’t mean the first round will be easy.

The Region 3-AAA champions face fourth-seeded Drew on Friday. It’s just the third season in school history for the Titans, who are 7-3 and have won five of their past six.

Just a year ago, Burke County – 9-1 this season – met 4-6 Crisp County but won only 19-18 in the first round. Including the Burke County result, three of the Cougars’ losses came to teams that reached at least the state quarterfinals.

Parker thinks Drew could also be a challenge.

“The thing about us is, I’ve been telling people, ‘We just had déjà vu of a bad draw,’ ” Parker said. “Last year, in Region 1, they felt Crisp County was playing as well as anybody in that region. This year, Drew, a lot of people in that region think that (after) Sandy Creek, they might be the next best team right now.”

TIME TO DELIVER: Washington County has probably had enough with the close losses, even if they have come against some of the best teams in the state.

The Golden Hawks, winners of six of seven, have lost to Burke County, Statesboro and Thomson, which are a combined 28-2.

Washington County (7-3) visits Stockbridge, the No. 2 team out of Region 4-AAA, on Friday hoping to advance to the second round of the state playoffs for just the second time since a semifinal run in 2006.

Stockbridge has reached the state playoffs two years in a row, after never making it from the school’s start in 1964.

MEETING SET: Now that the GHSA has received the FTE numbers from the Department of Education, the GHSA Reclassification Committee will meet Tuesday to place schools in classifications for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years.
