Burke County won't hold school on semifinal day

  • Follow High school

Burke County schools will be closed on Friday as the high school's football team travels to Carrollton for a 7:30 p.m. game in the Georgia Class AAA semifinals.

Amy Nunnally, the public information officer for Burke County Public Schools, said it was best to close schools since so many people, including students and teachers, are going to be involved in the trip.

The football team will have breakfast before leaving for Carrollton at 11 a.m., Nunnally said. The band and cheerleaders will depart at noon and buses for students, teachers and the rest of the community wanting to attend the game are expected to leave at 12:30 p.m. The early departure times will help deal with any potential delays such as traffic.

The Bears are in the semifinals for the first time since 1997.

Nunnally said the decision was made Sunday and that there haven't been any complaints about the schools being closed.

"This is huge for us -- so many people are planning on going," Nunnally said.

well i'll make the first

well i'll make the first complaint, the burke boe just raised our tax by two mills. so, will the staff be paid for this day off or will it be a furlough day? the taxpayers should not have to pay for this "event". this is a school system that has several thousand students and staff. less than a thousand will participate in this event. pure stupidity from my point of view. school is for education. football is extra curricular and teaches nothing in real world skills. the solution to this is simple, have these playoff games on saturdays, then everyone could participate. i guess the ga high school assn. can't figure that out.

You are right but only about

You are right but only about the ga high school association. As for the school system we are all in support of our Superintendent her decisions and the Burke County Bears (all sports, clubs, and activities). Think of what we are saving and not what we would potentially spend. Teachers choose to take a personal or vacation day to attend the game, got to pay for subs. Several hundred students don't come to school because they want to attend the game, low enrollment for the day. Numerous buses driving the team and the fans to the games, got to pay subs. This will also leave some buses doing double routes, twice as much pay for these drivers and children not getting home until very late. Public Safety officers accompany the team and fans to the game incase of emergency, who's keeping us safe here on campus? So from where I am sitting we saved a lot of money while supporting our youth. If it were your child out there playing their heart out for a sport, team and school they love then you would want us there supporting them, wouldn't you? I would! Go Bears, let's make history Friday night and go to the dome *on Saturday, December 10*!

sgachief, are you upset that

sgachief, are you upset that the bears are winning? With all the negative that the school has to deal with, the football team winning is a huge motivational lift. You want to squash that by complaining about a decision to rearrange the school calendar?

I'm not from Burke County but

I'm not from Burke County but am excited for the Bears. They are representing our region very well! We have also done this in the past to allow the students, families, and interested faculty members travel time. It's events like this that bring small communities together. Good luck Bears from a Bulldog!
