Rebels golfer runs away with state championship

Before her high school career is over, Strom Thurmond's McKenzie Talbert might very well enter the conversation about the best prep golfers in South Carolina history -- male or female.

Talbert carded 138 to blow away the field in the 36-hole Class AAA state championship at Quail Creek Golf Club in Conway, S.C., last week.

The sophomore finished seven shots ahead of A.C. Flora's Collins Bradshaw to take her second state crown in only two years of high school competition.

In Class AAAA, South Aiken finished with a team total of 331 to take fifth place at the Country Club of Lexington.

TITLE RUN: In Macon, Ga., Augusta Prep's girls cross country team won the GISA state championship Saturday, beating Mount de Sales by 29 points.

Amanda Murphy won the individual title, crossing the line in 19 minutes, 25 seconds.

The Cavalier boys finished second behind Mount de Sales.

POTENTIAL REMATCH: Aiken travels to Summerville today for a state volleyball quarterfinal playoff match.

This was the point last season at which the Hornets were upset by White Knoll at home. Should they advance past the Green Wave, a team the Hornets swept in the first round last year, Aiken would return home Thursday for the Lower State finals and a possible rematch with the Timberwolves.

White Knoll will face Blythewood in the quarterfinals today.

PITCHING POWERS 'PACK: Considering the talent Greenbrier softball lost in the offseason, finishing as the runner-up in Class AAAA was a pretty remarkable feat.

Solid pitching, most of which came from the arm of Savanah Coon , was the key for the Wolfpack.

In Greenbrier's seven wins during its postseason run, the Wolfpack allowed just 12 runs, an average of fewer than two per game.

CROSS COUNTRY CONTENDERS: The Georgia High School Association State Cross Country Championship will be held Saturday in Covington, Ga.

The top-ranked Lakeside girls and star runner Anna Bowles will be among the favorites for the title in Class AAAA.

Laney's Raheem Newton , Westside's DeAndre Smalley and A.R. Johnson's Rachel Bivens will be among the runners to watch in Class AAA.
