N. Augusta's Hammonds will sit out because of suspension

  • Follow High school

North Augusta quarterback Loranzo Hammonds confirmed Thursday afternoon that he won't play in tonight's Region 5-AAAA game at South Aiken because of a suspension handed down by the South Carolina High School League.

Hammonds was ejected from last week's game against White Knoll after an on-field incident. North Augusta coach Dan Pippin said the game tape didn't show what happened but said Tuesday that he didn't condone his quarterback's actions.

Pippin wouldn't confirm or deny the suspension, citing orders from principal Todd Bornscheuer to not comment on disciplinary actions taken against a student.

"We support any decision by the high school league. It's fair," Pippin said Thursday afternoon. "We will play to our best ability tomorrow night no matter who is on the field."

Backup quarterback Tyrell Hillary will likely step into the starter's role tonight. The junior filled in earlier this year when Hammonds missed time with a shoulder injury.

Go Tyrell, you as good or

Go Tyrell, you as good or better than Lorenzo. You are a great QB and an outstanding team leader. The fans are proud of you. NAHS does not need the type of player that Lorenzo seems to be on the field, we are better than that, we are not thugs.
