Greenbrier's softball team had little trouble disposing of Evans in its first game against the Lady Knights since returning to Class AAAA.
The Wolfpack, who had struggled early in the season while adjusting to a new core of players, pounded the Lady Knights 10-2 last Tuesday.
Morgan Tickerhoof pitched a complete-game five-hitter to pick up the victory. Liz Kelligan had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs.
"We finally played with some enthusiasm. We actually looked like the Greenbrier of old," said coach Garrett Black , whose team is unranked for the first time in nine years.
Greenbrier came into the game having lost two in a row and four of the previous seven.
Evans, which has lost one of the state's best players in Jenny Shepherd, is off to a sluggish 4-5 start to begin the season.
A LITTLE RESPECT: It took a couple of weeks of perfection for voters in the GACA/PrepCountry.com Softball Coaches Poll to move Screven County near the top of the ranking, but the Lady Gamecocks are now at No. 2 in Class AA after getting off to a 12-0 start.
Thomson, which started the season 9-1, cracked the top 10 in Class AAA, coming in at No. 7.
A SOLID SHOWING: South Aiken finished sixth in a field of 15 schools at the Palmetto Preview girls golf tournament at Mid-Carolina Country Club on Tuesday. Taylor Dodson was the low scorer for the Lady Thoroughbreds, carding 74.
OFF AND RUNNING: The Aiken boys and girls cross country teams started the season with wins over North Augusta on Wednesday.
