Mustangs draw tough foe

  • Follow High school

Midland Valley's win over South Aiken last week earned the Mustangs a first-round home playoff game. But they didn't catch a break with their opponent.

Crestwood, the Region 6-AAA No. 3-seed, will play at Midland Valley on Friday in a showdown of strong defensive units.

"I don't know if we've faced speed like they have across the board," Midland Valley coach Rick Knight said. "They've lost some tough games to some very good teams, and you watch them and you can see they've got some tremendous athletes."

Crestwood (5-5) beat Sumter, a Class AAAA team with an 8-2 record, earlier this season. The Knights dropped five consecutive games before wrapping up the regular season with wins over Darlington (4-6) and Lakewood (0-10).

Midland Valley, which claimed second place in Region 5-AAA with an 8-2 record, will have quarterback Marquett Carr back behind center, Knight said.

Carr missed the final two regular-season games with a shoulder injury.

ALL-STARS: The rosters for the North-South All-Star game, set for Dec. 12 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., have been released and several area South Carolina players made the list.

D efensive back Quantel Mack (Williston-Elko), linebacker Marcelis Thompson (Strom Thurmond) and offensive lineman Jonathan Williams (Strom Thurmond) made the North roster. Tailback Jeremy Robinson (Midland Valley), defensive lineman Demarcus Lawrence (Silver Bluff), linebacker Montel Hughes (North Augusta) and offensive lineman Charles Coleman (North Augusta) earned spots on the South roster.

Matt Hazel , a wide receiver from North Augusta, was the only area player last week chosen to represent South Carolina in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, scheduled for Dec. 19 in Spartanburg.

CLASS AA: Strom Thurmond and Silver Bluff begin postseason play this week on opposites sides of the Class AA bracket.

The Rebels (8-2) will play host to Eau Claire (1-9). Silver Bluff (8-2) will play at home against Bishop England (4-6).

CLASS A: Williston-Elko and Blackville-Hilda kick off the postseason this week as well.

The Blue Devils (10-0) earned the Upper State No. 1 seed in Class A D-II and will play host to Great Falls (3-7), while Blackville-Hilda (6-4) made the playoffs as a No. 6 seed and will play at third-seeded Scott's Branch (5-5).
