PLAY OF THE GAME: Statesboro linebacker Weldon Watts' 25-yard interception return for a touchdown with 3:33 remaining in the fourth quarter sealed the victory for the Blue Devils, who improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Region 3-AAAA.
WHY STATESBORO WON: The undefeated Blue Devils employed a bend but don't break style of defense against Lakeside's potent passing attack of quarterback Chad Chandler and his corps of receivers.
WHY LAKESIDE LOST: The Panthers (2-3, 1-3 in 3-AAAA) didn't execute in the red zone. Their controlled passing game moved the ball up and down the field against the Blue Devils, but Lakeside bogged down when it moved inside the Statesboro 20-yard line. The Panthers missed three field goals, although two of the attempts were from more than 40 yards out.
STAR OF THE GAME: Despite the loss, Chandler completed 28 of 43 attempts for 338 yards. He connected with seven different receivers, each of whom had at least two receptions each.
QUOTABLE: "Our offense wasn't on the field enough tonight to get into any kind of rhythm. If we're not on the field, we can't pound, pound it at you. But give all the credit to Lakeside for playing so well defensively. Fortunately, we had some fight in us on defense to keep them out of the end zone." - Statesboro head coach Steve Pennington.
WHAT'S NEXT: Statesboro plays host to Greenbrier, Friday, 7:30 p.m.; Lakeside at Brunswick, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
