"I was disappointed with the pitching early in the game," GreenJackets manager Dave Machemer said. "We didn't make good pitches. Everything was up in the zone."
GreenJackets starter Jeremy Toole, who failed to make it out of the second inning in two of his previous three starts, lasted only 3q innings Friday night. He surrendered seven runs, five earned, on eight hits with a walk. All but one of Kannapolis' runs in a seven-run fourth inning were credited to Toole.
Trailing 8-2, the GreenJackets mounted a comeback with a solo home run in the fourth from Hector Sanchez and five runs on seven consecutive hits in the fifth.
Ydwin Villegas tripled in the sixth inning and scored on a balk by reliever Garrett Johnson to bring the GreenJackets within one. Tommy Joseph tied the game with a leadoff homer in the seventh.
Kannapolis scored the game-deciding run in the eighth after Villegas' second error of the game put runners at first and third with no outs. Brady Shoemaker drove in the go-ahead run with a fielder's choice grounder to Villegas, who bobbled a potential double-play ball and settled for the out at second while the runner from third scored.
The GreenJackets put a runner at third in the eighth with two outs, but left him stranded on a Chris Dominguez strikeout.
Augusta went down in order in the ninth.
