Area will play host to 1,000 golfers

For the second time in three years, the Augusta area will play host to the Georgia High School Association Golf State Championships, the Augusta Sports Council announced this morning. The event, presented by E-Z-GO, returns in May 2014, two years after the city held the boys and girls tournament.

The GHSA Golf State Championships consists of 12 tournaments ranging from Class A to Class AAAAAA, with more than 1,000 golfers expected to compete. A practice round will be held Sunday, May 18, with the championships starting the following day. Golf courses committed to hold play include Applewood Golf Course, Bartram Trail Golf Course, Belle Meade Country Club, Champions Retreat, Forest Hills Golf Club, Gordon Lakes Golf Club, Goshen Plantation Golf Club, Jones Creek Golf Club, Pointe South Golf Club, Waynesboro Country Club and West Lake Country Club.

Burke County High School golf coach and athletic director Wade Marchman will serve as the tournament director.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the 2014 GHSA Golf State Championships can contact Michelle Naval at the Augusta Sports Council at 706-722-8326 ext. 235 or at michelle@augustasportscouncil.org.
