The First Tee of Augusta's Jason Murphy was chosen to be among the juniors to play in this week's Champions Tour event.

Murphy was selected to play in the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, which starts Friday in California.

The tournament pairs 80 junior golfers from the First Tee program with Champions Tour players to compete in a pro-junior event. The golfers play two rounds at Pebble Beach Golf Links and one round at Del Monte Golf Course.

“(Pebble Beach) is one of the best courses in the world,” Murphy said. “So many want to play it. I can’t believe I’m going to play it. I’m very thankful for the First Tee to have this opportunity.”

Murphy, 17, has tried to play in the tournament two previous times without success. The process involves applications and essays, and a panel of judges pick from around 150 juniors.

“Not being accepted the first two years was heartbreaking,” he said. “They encouraged me to keep going, and this time they chose me. I’m so honored and humbled to represent my chapter and show what comes out of the First Tee of Augusta.”

Murphy said he will find out who his playing partner is today during a dinner party. Those playing include such former Masters Tournament champions as Fred Couples, Ben Crenshaw, Bernhard Langer, Larry Mize and Mark O’Meara.

“I see them on TV, all those big names,” Murphy said. “It’s crazy that I’ll be playing with them.”

AT A GLANCE

Jason Murphy has been a member of The First Tee of Augusta for six years, has a 74 stroke average and received the Coaches Award for outstanding leadership and golfing ability at Westside.
