North Augusta's Jeff Pope leads Regions Bank series event at Gordon Lakes

It didn’t take Jeff Pope long to get back on his game in the Regions Bank Amateur Series.

Six days after a disappointing showing in the defense of his Augusta City Amateur title, the North Augustan rebounded to take the first-round lead in the Ping Regions Invitational at Gordon Lakes Golf Course on Saturday.

Pope, the 2012 Regions Bank Amateur Series Player of the Year who has two wins this season, opened with 3-under-par 69. He’s one shot ahead of Steve Foss and three in front of a group of five golfers at 72, including Perry Watson Memorial winner Lewis White.

In the senior division, North Augusta’s Tommy Carpenter also leads with 69 in his bid for a third title this year. He’s one shot ahead of Chuck Withers, who is playing on his home course and is a former senior division winner in this event.

Mike Jackson and Jeff Roberts each shot 73.
