Once a week every year, the Masters Tournament shines a spotlight on Augusta.
That event is just one of several golf tournaments throughout the year in a city synonymous with the sport.
Later this month, the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley Golf Club will be held just outside of Augusta. The third annual event, April 26-28, is held in Graniteville.
Considered one of the top junior tournaments in golf, the event features 54 juniors from around the world. Six-time Masters winner Jack Nicklaus will be the featured speaker at this year’s event, which has received tape-delayed broadcast coverage in the past.
Zachary Olsen, of Cordova, Tenn., shot 7-under-par 209 to win last year’s tournament by three shots over four golfers. He’s back to defend his title.
One local player, Greyson Sigg of Augusta, will be in this year’s field. The University of Georgia signee tied for 39th in his debut in the event in 2012.
One week after the Junior Invitational, the NGA Tour visits McCormick, S.C., about 45 minutes outside of Augusta. The Savannah Lakes Village Classic, May 2-5, will be held at Monticello Golf Club, which features several holes bordering Thurmond Lake.
The event offers a guaranteed purse of $200,000 to the up-and-coming professional golfers.
In late July, the E-Z-GO Vaughn Taylor Championship will be held at Jones Creek Golf Club. The event is one of the top tournaments on the American Junior Golf Association circuit.
