Shawn Stefani, the 31-year-old rookie who led by one after 36 holes, had 74 and still was only two shots behind. His day could have been much worse except for a tee shot that caromed off a tree and into the fairway on the second hole, and a big hook on the third that hit the tire of a golf cart and stayed in play.
The group one shot out of the lead included 2010 winner Jim Furyk (67) and Ben Kohles (69).
CHAMPIONS TOUR: In Newport Beach, Calif., David Frost maintained a one-stroke lead over Fred Couples in the Toshiba Classic, eagling the final hole for 5-under-par 66.
After opening with 63, Frost is at 13-under 129. The South African made an
18-foot putt for the eagle on the par-5 18th, while Couples two-putted from 35 feet for birdie and 66 of his own.
Jim Gallagher Jr. was third at 8-under after a 68.
Augusta native Larry Mize is tied for 62nd place after rounds of 73-72.
LPGA TOUR: In Phoenix, Ai Miyazato pulled back in front in the LPGA Founders Cup, making three birdies in a four-hole stretch on the back nine and saving par with a long putt on the par-4 finishing hole.
The diminutive Japanese star shot her second consecutive 5-under-par 67 after opening with a tournament-record 64. At 19-under 197, she had a two-stroke lead second-round leader Jee Young Lee (72 on Saturday) and Stacy Lewis (68).
The third-ranked Lewis, coming off a victory two weeks ago in Singapore, is in position to take the top spot in the world from Yani Tseng with a win today, as long as Tseng – who is tied for 63rd place – finishes third or worse.
EUROPEAN TOUR: In Greater Noida, India, Thomas Aiken shot 10-under-par 62 and will carry a three-shot lead into today’s final round of the Avantha Masters.
Aiken had eight birdies and an eagle in his third round to total 18-under 198 to move ahead of Liang Wenchong of China, whose 69 gave him 15 under. Kiradech Aphibarnrat (66) and David Drysdale (68) were at
14- under.
Another stroke behind were Scott Hend (68), Joonas Granberg (69) and Tommy Fleetwood (69).
