David Frost leads Champions event

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — David Frost shot 8-under-par 63 on Friday to take a one-stroke lead over Fred Couples after the first round of the Champions Tour’s Toshiba Classic.

Couples, the 2010 winner at Newport Beach Country Club, is playing his second senior event and third overall tournament of the year. He cuts his schedule to make sure he’s healthy for the Masters Tournament, which begins April 11.

Jim Gallagher Jr. opened with 66. Bernhard Langer topped the group at 67.

Augusta native Larry Mize opened with 73.

LPGA TOUR: In Phoenix, Jee Young Lee birdied three of the last four holes to take a one-stroke lead over Ai Miyazato at the LPGA Founders Cup.

Lee shot 8-under-par 64 to reach 15-under 129.

Miyazato bogeyed her final hole for 67 a day after shooting a tournament-record 63. She is playing her first event since sustaining a whiplash injury three weeks ago in a five-vehicle crash in Thailand.

Third-ranked Stacy Lewis, coming off a victory two weeks ago in Singapore, was four strokes back after 65.

Part-time Augustan Nicole Jeray shot 75-75 to miss the cut.

EUROPEAN TOUR: In Greater Noida, India, Chapchai Nirat and Liang Wenchong each shot 6-under-par 66s to tie for the lead after the second round of the Avantha Masters.

Chawalit Plaphol (68), David Drysdale (67), Joonas Granberg (67) and Tommy Fleetwood (65) were two strokes behind in third.
