Norlander leads locals in Q School

In La Quinta, Calif., Henrik Norlander and Vaughn Taylor are off to strong starts in the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament.

Norlander, a former Augusta State golfer, shot 5-under-par 67 and is tied for ninth place.

Taylor, a PGA Tour veteran and two-time winner, had 68 and is tied for 20th.

There are still five more rounds to go at PGA West, where players will determine their playing fate for 2013. The top 25 finishers and ties from the 172 starters will earn PGA Tour playing privileges, or tour cards, for the 2013 season.

The next 50 will earn Web.com Tour cards for 2013 and the remainder receive conditional status on the Web.com Tour.

Of the other area players in the field, Patrick Reed is tied for 50th at 70, Kevin Kisner is tied for 82nd after 71, Stephen Poole is tied for 111th after 72, Scott Parel is tied for 136th after 73 and Scott Brown is tied for 169th after 78.

Steve LeBrun in the tournament leader at 64.
