Aiken’s Stephen Poole came through with a low round when he needed it and advanced to the second stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament.

Poole opened with rounds of 68-71-71 at Florence (S.C.) and was tied for 28th place. Knowing only the 17 would advance after Saturday’s final round, Poole came through with 67 to tie for 11th place.

David Robinson, of Sandersville, Ga., also tied for 11th place. Robinson, who was tied for seventh place after rounds of 74-63-68, closed with 72.

Failing to advance from the Florence site were Scott Usher (72-74-67-69 to tie for 32nd) and Garland Smith (71-74-74-73 to tie for 57th place).

Two other area players, in a first-stage event at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga., also failed to advance.

Casey Johnson and Mitch Krywulycz both tied for 42nd place in the qualifier that took the top 18 players. Krywulycz shot 71-75-72-67 and Johnson had 68-68-76-73.

There are six second stage sites around the country, with three running from Nov. 13-16 and the other three from Nov. 14-17.
