SAN MARTIN, Calif. —
John Mallinger finished with a flurry Friday to build a three-shot lead after 36 holes of the Frys.com Open.
Mallinger played his final four holes in 4-under to shoot 9-under-par 62 and move to 14-under 128 at the halfway mark of the PGA Tour event at CordeValle Golf Club.
The former Long Beach State golfer eagled No. 15, parred No. 16 and then birdied Nos. 17 and 18.
Billy Horschel (65 on Friday) and Jhonattan Vegas (67) are tied for second place.
WORLD GOLF FINAL: In Belek, Turkey, Justin Rose shot 5-under-par 66 to beat Lee Westwood by a stroke and win the eight-player World Golf Final and earn a career-best $1.5 million.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: In Conover, N.C., Augusta native Larry Mize had a bogey-free round and is one shot off the lead after the first round of the Greater Hickory Classic.
Mize shot 6-under-par 66 and trails Dan Forsman. Fred Funk and David Frost are tied with Mize for second.
WEB.COM TOUR: In Miami, Augusta’s Scott Parel moved into the top 20 in the Miccosukee Championship.
Parel shot his second consecutive 1-under-par 70 and moved from a tie for 37th place to a tie for 16th.
He’s five shots off the lead of Steve LeBrun (67 on Friday) and Christopher DeForest (70), who are at 7-under 135.
Aiken native Matt Hendrix missed the cut after shooting 70-82–152.
EUROPEAN TOUR: In Vilamoura, Portugal, Ross Fisher shot 4-under-par 67 in the second round to move to 10-under 132 and increased his lead to three strokes in the Portugal Masters
Former Augusta State golfer Jamie Elson had 69 and is at 140.
Scott Jamieson, another ex-Jaguar, had 70 and is at 141.
LPGA TOUR: In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, defending champion Na Yeon Choi took a two-stroke lead in the LPGA Malaysia, shooting 4-under-par 67 to reach 10- under.
Sydnee Michaels is second after 65.
