Justin Thomas downs Tide teammate in US Amateur

CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. — In a close, tense match between teammates and friends, Justin Thomas beat fellow Uni­versity of Alabama player Bobby Wyatt on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur championship at Cherry Hills.

Thomas won 1 up in the match-play contest against the top-seeded Wyatt.

Thomas will face Australian Oliver Goss, a 2-and-1 winner over Bobby Leopold, of Cranston, R.I.

Chris Williams, of Moscow, Idaho, who is first in the world amateur rankings, also got in to the quarterfinals by defeating Edouard Espana, of France, 3 and 2. Williams will face Steven Fox, of Hendersonville, Tenn., who advanced with a 2-up victory over Zack Munroe, of Charlotte, N.C.

Thomas Pieters, of Belgium, lost his second-round match, but he used an 8-iron for the hole-in-one on the 177-yard hole. It was the 17th ace in U.S. Am history.

WEB.COM TOUR: In Overland Park, Kan., Aaron Watkins and Jason Gore shot 6-under-par 65 and led the Midwest Classic when play was suspended because of darkness Thursday.

Augusta’s Scott Parel was 1-over through 12. Aiken’s Matt Hendrix was 4-over through 14.

RYDER CUP: European captain Jose Maria Olazabal announced three of his four vice captains Thursday, picking Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley and Thomas Bjorn for the match against the United States.

The Ryder Cup will be held Sept. 28-30.
