TURNBERRY, Scotland — Gary Hallberg made eight birdies in 7-under-par 63 on Friday during the windy second round of the Senior British Open, taking a three-stroke lead on Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman.

Langer had 73 after his opening 64 while Lehman shot 71.

“When I saw Gary’s score going on the board I thought, ‘Wow! Did he play the par-3 course across the road?’ He’s a bit of a character, so nothing surprises me what he might shoot,” Lehman said.

“It was one of the greatest days I’ve had in many years, it was just a pleasure,” Hallberg said. “I played aggressively and had some great putts go in, but I started to choke a bit near the end and left putts at 15, 16 and 18 short.”

LPGA/EUROPEAN LADIES TOUR: In Evian-Les-Baines, France, Stacy Lewis shot 3-under-par 69 to keep the lead after the second round of the Evian Masters, one stroke ahead of Ilhee Lee.

“Today was actually a little bit of a struggle for me. I wasn’t really sure how I would play coming off a good score yesterday,” said Lewis, who had 63 on Thursday with nine birdies. “It’s hard when you make pars and you feel like you’re going backwards because of all the birdies I made yesterday.”

Lee had four consecutive birdies on the back nine to finish with 67. Paula Creamer (67), the 2005 Evian champion, and Inbee Park (64) were three shots behind Lewis.

Three players finished 36 holes at 7-under 135.

Augusta’s Scott Parel has shot 71-69–140 and Aiken native Matt Hendrix is at 70-71–141.
