NeSmith, currently the top-ranked boys golfer in the AJGA Polo Golf Rankings and No. 14 in the latest world amateur rankings, has committed to play at South Carolina. He is currently in Orlando, Fla., and competing for the East team in the Wyndham Cup match play tournament, which is being played this week at Bay Hill.
He was a three-time All-State selection at North Augusta High School and was a first team AJGA All-American in 2011. NeSmith was one of four junior golfers to receive the prestigious Byron Nelson International Junior Golf Award in May.
On Tuesday in Orlando, NeSmith and Augusta’s Greyson Sigg split their two matches in the first round of the AJGA’s Wyndham Cup at Bay Hill Club and Lodge.
NeSmith and Sigg are on the east team, which leads the west 8½ to 6½ after Day 1 of the three-day match.
NeSmith and James Yoon won their four-ball match, beating Scott Scheffler and Branson Davis 1-up.
In the afternoon mixed foursomes, NeSmith and Jaye Maria Green lost 1-up to Thomas Lim and Amy Lee.
As for Sigg, he and Lee MCoy lost their four-ball match 2-up to Connor Black and Brad Dalke. In the mixed foursomes, Sigg teamed with Samantha Wagner to beat Clayont Madey and Jessic Vasilic 2 and 1.
