Augusta State golf in seventh place

ATHENS, Ga. — Augusta State’s Taylor Floyd matched his low round of the year at the right time. Floyd birdied five of the final 12 holes today for a 4-under-par 67 today in the first round of the NCAA Athens Regional.

With Floyd’s play, the Jaguars opened with a 1-under-par 283 at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

Augusta State is in seventh place in the the 13-team regional.

Alabama leads the way after posting 268, with North Florida (271) just behind. East Carolina is in third at 276.

Brian Carter of Martinez shot 69 to help lead Georgia. The Bulldogs are in fourth place after posting 280, two shots ahead of Houston and UNC Wilmington.

Augusta State got off to a 5-over-par start through four holes but recovered midway during its round. Brendan Gillins birdied five holes during a 10-hole stretch for 70. Alex Wennstam birdied two of his last three holes to shoot 73. Robin Petterson shot 35 on the back nine for 73 to help round out the Augusta State scoring. Derek Chang had a non-counting 81.

The second round of the 54-hole event will be held Friday. The top five teams at the conclusion of the regional advance to the NCAA Championship later this month at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
