Local golfers start strong in PGA Tour qualifier

LA QUINTA, Calif. --- Swainsboro, Ga., native Will Claxton and Daniel Summerhays topped the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament leaderboard at 8-under 64 after the first round today at PGA West.

Claxton opened on the Nicklaus Tournament Course, and Summerhays played the TPC Stadium Course.

Evans resident Vaughn Taylor, William McGirt, Billy Hurley III and Bae Sang-moon are a stroke back. Taylor and McGirt played the Nicklaus Course, and Hurley and Bae opened on the Stadium Course.

Aiken’s Kevin Kisner is tied for 10th at 67.

Aiken native Matt Hendrix opened with 68 and is tied for 26th and Augusta’s Scott Parel is tied for 87th after 71.

All of the local golfers played Nicklaus Tournament Course.

David Duval had 72 on the Stadium Course.

The top 25 in the six-round event will earn 2012 PGA Tour cards.
