College disc golf tourney returns

Event organizer Pete May witnessed the growth of collegiate disc golf first-hand Wednesday afternoon in North Augusta.

"We had more people at our practice round this year than we had competing last year," said May, whose event fielded six teams in the first year.

"This is exciting."

The fourth annual National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships begin at 2 p.m. today at the Hippodrome. The tournament runs through Sunday.

Defending champion Mississippi State heads up a full field of 26 teams (comprised of four to five players each) in the championship flight. Also competing is two-time champion Georgia, along with Augusta State and teams coming from as far away as Cal State-Monterrey and Oregon.

An additional number of teams will compete in the first flight.
