Gamecocks will play USC Aiken

The South Carolina men’s team’s first game will be an exhibition against USC Aiken on Nov. 3.

It is the only exhibition for the Gamecocks, who released their nonconference schedule on Wednesday.

The exhibition against USC Aiken will be played in Columbia, but the game time has not been set.

Ex-Marshall star is eGolf’s leader

In Wallace, N.C., former Marshall golfer Christian Brand shot 8-under-par 64 to take the first-round lead in the eGolf Tour’s River Landing Open.

Brand has a one-shot lead over Ryan Nelson, a four-time winner on the tour.

Former Augusta State golfer Mitch Krywulycz opened with 69.

The matches are Sept. 14-15 at Belle Meade Country Club in Thomson.

The qualifiers from Georgia are David Hogan, Lewis White, Michael Phelps, Ethan Chamineak, Herman Belton, John-Christian Whyte, John Wade, Mike Jackson, Robert Samuels, Chuck Withers, Kenny Larry, Frank Perry and Mark Ernyei.

The South Carolina qualifiers are Jeff Pope, Steve Foss, Lance Johnson, Dustin Hoang, Keith Downs, Matt Jackson, Tommy Carpenter, Glen Hurt, Billy Rangos, Jeff Roberts, Ron Schroder and Robin Alley.

The overall series record in the matches is 12-12-1.

• Augusta’s Laura Coble will be on the Georgia team that goes for its third consecutive victory in the USGA Women’s State Team Championship.

It will be played Sept. 17-19 at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio.

Coble, a member of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, has been a member of the past two winning teams. She’ll be joined on the three-player team by Brenda Pictor, of Marietta, and Mercedes Huarte, of Suwanee.

Chancellor is off to a strong start

LaGrange freshman outside hitter Katie Chancellor, a former Grovetown High player, has been named USA South Rookie of the Week.

Chancellor had 40 kills in leading the Panthers to a 3-1 record at the Huntingdon College Jubilee. She averaged 2.9 kills and 2.9 digs per set in the four matches.

Nets coach buys a share of team

Head coach Jason Kidd is buying a portion of Jay-Z’s minority share of the Brooklyn Nets, according to ESPN.com.

There is no rule against coaches owning a stake in teams, but there is a rule against players or agents doubling as owners. Jay-Z formed the agency Roc Nation this year.

According to a NetsDaily report, the value of the share being bought by Kidd is $500,000 and represents one-sixth of 1 percent ownership of the team.

The transaction must be approved by the NBA.

Soccer

German veteran decides to retire

Former Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger says he is retiring following a string of injury problems.

Hitzlsperger, 31, made 52 appearances for Germany, including playing at the World Cup and European Championship.

Hitzlsperger has played for clubs including Stuttgart, Aston Villa, West Ham and Everton during his career.
